Birdwatching is a frequent activity in this pet-friendly park

Hill Country State Natural Area is an equestrian-friendly park about an hour northwest of San Antonio, near Bandera, the "Cowboy Capital of the World." The park has 40 miles of multi-use trails for horseback riding, hiking, camping, birdwatching and mountain biking. Check in at the Visitors Center and pick up a trail map. Once you're on the trails, they are not very well marked, so pay attention to landmarks as you go. If you bring lunch, sit a while at the picnic tables outside the Visitors Center.
